This five-course series on adult assessments in hearing health is intended to stimulate collaborative approaches for hearing health professionals, regardless of what hearing technologies they typically provide. Ideally, professionals will support patients in their long-term hearing loss journey, facilitating transitions when appropriate and a comfortable sense of the range of ways hearing loss can be addressed throughout one’s hearing journey.

Learning Outcomes
- After this course, participants will be able to discuss common challenges providers face when caring for older adults with hearing loss and summarize changes that can occur to a patient’s hearing as they age.
- After this course, participants will be able to list the key aspects of the audiological cochlear implant evaluation and describe the specific audiological assessment tools which are part of the cochlear implant test battery.
- After this course, participants will be able to explain how the CIQOL instruments can be used during CI evaluations.
- After this course, participants will be able to explain cochlear implant surgery to address fears or misconceptions that may prevent patients from moving forward.

Camille Dunn, PhD, joined the Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Iowa in 2003 where she is an Assistant Professor and the Director of the Cochlear Implant Program. She received her Masters of Science Degree in Audiology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1998 and her Doctor of Philosophy Degree from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2003. Dr. Dunn holds her Audiology license from the State of Iowa. She maintains her Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) and is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and the American Cochlear Implant Alliance (ACIA). She is a Principal Investigator on a NIH-funded grant studying Hybrid cochlear implants and an Investigator on a Department of Defense Grant studying Hybrid cochlear Implants in veterans.

Ted McRackan
MD, MSCR
Dr. Teddy McRackan, MD MSCR is a fellowship trained neurotologist with a research career focused on a better understanding of the communication, health, social, and economic benefits of cochlear implantation in adults with hearing loss and the development of patient-centered interventions with a long-term goal of improving cochlear implant (CI) functional outcomes. To date, his research program has been supported by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, American Cochlear Implant Alliance, and the Doris Duke Foundation. In May 2022, he received the Triological Society’s Harold Mosher Award for Outstanding Clinical Research for his work developing and implementing the Cochlear Implant Quality of Life (CIQOL) instruments. His research interests have been informed his experiences in basic, translational, and clinical outcomes research, and as a surgeon-scientist. He has published over 100 manuscripts and book chapters and has edited a comprehensive Neurotology textbook. In addition, he maintains a very active clinical practice and serves as the Medical Director of the MUSC Cochlear Implant Program and Director of the MUSC Skull Base Center.

Donna Sorkin, MA is the executive director of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance, a non-profit organization working to expand access to cochlear implants through research, advocacy and awareness. Prior to joining ACI Alliance in late 2012, Donna was Vice President of Consumer Affairs for Cochlear Americas where she led public policy initiatives and activities aimed at the broad life needs of cochlear implant users including insurance practices, habilitation, and educational needs of children with cochlear implants. Ms. Sorkin was previously the executive director of Hearing Loss Association of America and the AG Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. She has served on federal, corporate and university boards including the U.S. Access Board, the National Institute on Deafness, NIH and Gallaudet University. She holds a Masters from Harvard's Kennedy School.

Rene Gifford

René Gifford, Ph.D., CCC-A holds the Fred H. Bess Chair in Audiology and is a Professor in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences as well as the Director of the Cochlear Implant Research Laboratory at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Her research focuses on the study of auditory perception, spatial hearing, and binaural development for children using combined electric and acoustic stimulation (EAS) via hearing aid and cochlear implant technology. Her primary professional goal is centered on improving auditory-based outcomes and ensuring that we are using data-driven recommendations for hearing and speech/language intervention for our patients. Dr. Gifford’s research has been continuously NIH funded for 20 years, she has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles, multiple book chapters, and she authored a book, now in its second edition, entitled “Cochlear Implant Patient Assessment: Evaluation of Candidacy, Performance, and Outcomes.” Dr. Gifford was a featured scientist on the National Public Radio, Science Friday broadcast entitled Breakthrough: Portraits of Women in Science—Hearing a Whole New World. Additionally, Dr. Gifford was awarded the 2015 Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Recent Clinical Achievement from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the 2017 Vanderbilt University Chancellor's Award for Research, as well as the 2021 Jerger Career Award for Research in Audiology from the American Academy of Audiology.
