This course covers best practices for evaluating adult cochlear implant (CI) single-sided deafness (SSD) candidates, including the insurance elements that need to be considered with this population. Additionally, the outcomes and benefits of the technology with this population are discussed.

The Minimum Speech Test Battery (MSTB) for adults was first introduced in 1996 and first updated in 2011. Both versions of the MSTB have been widely used by clinicians to evaluate cochlear implant candidacy and to post-operatively evaluate performance. After an extensive review with a panel of experts, the MSTB – Revision 3 is now available. This course provides an overview of the current evidence-based best practice guidelines and case studies to demonstrate clinical application.

This course will provide information regarding guidelines that can be used to identify patients who should be referred for a cochlear implant candidacy evaluation. It will include tools that clinicians can use to support their counseling of patients about cochlear implant evaluations and will include information regarding typical outcomes received by patients who receive a cochlear implant.

This course will provide case examples of patients who have been evaluated for a cochlear implant with a summary of their outcomes. Examples will include testing of patients with Single Sided Deafness (SSD), traditional candidates, and patients who qualify for hearing preservation surgery, such as those with normal low frequency hearing and severe to profound high frequency hearing loss.

This course introduces the challenges that patients with single-sided deafness face and details diagnostic work-up, treatment options, and long-term outcomes after treatment with cochlear implants. Furthermore, current research on neural activation and its effect on the treatment of subjects with single-sided deafness is discussed.
