Over the past five years, we have seen a growing interest in studying vestibular disorders in children. The most commonly noteworthy are vestibular disorders in congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and cochlear implants. Identifying and diagnosing vestibular and balance dysfunction in children is essential for their overall well-being. However, the diagnosis process is very demanding.This talk will provide an overview of vestibular and balance assessments in children with SNHL.

Roger microphones and receivers are the key components of an adaptive remote microphone system. This session educates attendees about two new receivers and one new microphone that help children with hearing loss and normal hearing in educational environments.

This course begins by providing estimates of the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and ASD and hearing loss as well as strategies to obtain a valid hearing test from children with this disorder. The remainder of the course focuses on assessing and managing common auditory difficulties faced by children with ASD and normal hearing sensitivity. Strategies to mitigate listening difficulties include school accommodations, remote-microphone technology, and auditory training.

Audiologists and school personnel serving students with hearing loss continue to face challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic due to dramatic changes to students’ learning environments and formats. Join Dr. Erin Schafer, of University of North Texas, to review key findings and the resulting recommendations to promote learning, engagement and educational access for K-12 students with hearing loss.

This course is dedicated to reviewing fitting guidelines for children with a Ponto System. Specifically, the course will focus on best practices when fitting a child with a Ponto 3 SuperPower and a Ponto 4 Sound Processor. We will review the different parameters within Genie Medical as well as introduce new pediatric resources to assist with the fitting process of a young child.

Children with deafness and autism have complex needs that require strong collaboration from a multi-disciplinary team for successful interventions. Service providers may feel uncertain about ways to coordinate and set priorities for these children. This series will explore multidisciplinary perspectives on deafness when it coexists with autism in an effort to help hearing health professionals gain better knowledge of autism and help understand the value of cross-disciplinary collaboration. Multi-disciplinary perspectives will be offered to help professionals recognize the early signs of autism coexisting with deafness, learn strategies to target more effective evaluation and interventions, and improve services to the child and family. This series will provide resources and clinical examples of Music Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Early Intervention, and School-Age Communication interventions for this unique population.

When deafness coexists with autism, sensory seeking behaviors may be present and interdisciplinary interventions will be necessary for success. Learn the normal development of sensory, attention, and play skills, and understand vestibular processing and how to create and manage interventions that are sensitive and responsive to sensory issues.

Recent surveys have revealed that 1 in 59 children with hearing loss also receives services for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) (Szymanski, Brice, Lam & Hotto, 2012). Current research demonstrates that many children with ASD respond more frequently and appropriately to music than to other auditory stimuli (Thaut, 1999, Whipple, J. 2004). This presentation will provide resources and clinical examples of music therapy as an intervention for this unique population.
