Persons with hearing loss often struggle with emotional challenges directly related to these hearing difficulties. Too often, these challenges are going unnoticed by the hearing care professional. This podcast will review recent research findings related to the emotional challenges associated with hearing loss in adults and provide a strategy for how clinicians can better manage and account for these emotional challenges patients face.

Modern hearing aids are designed to improve and expand the functional communication abilities of persons with hearing loss. Unfortunately, not all devices on the market do this effectively. As most hearing care professionals know, the functional capabilities of individuals with hearing loss are defined by more than the audiogram. Many of these functional capabilities fall under the rubric, auditory wellness. This podcast will be a discussion between Brian Taylor of Signia and his guest, Barbara Weinstein, professor of audiology at City University of New York. They will outline the concept of auditory wellness, how it can be measured clinically and how properly fitted hearing aids have the potential to improve auditory wellness.

This course will review how the use of hearing aids can impact the user’s quality of life in the areas of soundscape awareness, stress reduction, physical activity, communication, socialization and mental alertness. We will specifically look at different hearing features, and review research regarding how these features can alter benefit.

This course provides insights into the degree to which provider interaction influences patient readiness towards audiological services. Patient readiness is quantified through predisposed and post-appointment expectation profiles across 10 dimensions and among three professional settings. Overall, outcomes indicate that patient readiness is influenced by the behavior of the provider which, at present, appears to be a barrier to patient acceptance of treatment options.
