There are three components of sound, frequency, intensity and timing. When ears are receiving sound differently, as in a bimodal listening situation with a cochlear implant patient, it’s important to match all three components giving bimodal patients improved opportunities for hearing in noise, localizing sounds and feeling more balanced overall.

Stefan Zirn
Stefan Zirn is a Professor for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Applied Sciences Offenburg, Germany. He holds a Dipl.-Ing. degree from the University of Freiburg. After completing his studies, he worked for the MED-EL company as an engineer. Following this, he changed to the University of Munich and worked in the field of CI treatment and did his doctorate at the same time. After working as a post doc at the University of Freiburg, he was offered a professorship at the University of Applied Sciences Offenburg in 2015. He authored several publications on experimental CI research and auditory evoked potentials. Since 2014, he has been working on the topic of optimizing bimodal fitting with CI and hearing aid by adjusting the timing of stimulation of both modalities.

Jennifer Robinson is an audiologist and the Senior Product Manager for Software at MED-EL Innsbruck Austria. Jennifer holds degrees from Purdue University and University of Louisville, along with PhD coursework completed at Northwestern University. Her career has included industry experience in product pipeline management and audiological research work at GN Resound, clinical research at two other hearing aid manufacturers, as well as a number of years in clinical practice as an audiologist in the USA. She has authored several publications on hearing aid fitting and algorithms, as well as delivered numerous presentations on hearing aids, fitting, effects of hearing loss, fitting algorithms, noise reduction systems, and validation techniques.
