As lower-priced OTC devices become available to consumers, the need to address other factors that influence patient treatment readiness will increase in importance. Hearing care professionals must be prepared to address factors such as stigma if they want to effectively improve the uptake rate or hearing device usage and lower the age of first-time buyers. This podcast presents a strategy for addressing stigma through targeted patient education.

Rather than testing hearing and fitting hearing aids, the primary role of the HCP is to keep people socially active, mentally sharp and connected to others in the workplace and at home. In this podcast, researcher Jack Holman examines the relationship between hearing loss, hearing aid use and well-being, The conversation focuses on various dimensions of well-being, including physical activity, social activity, and emotional status, and the affects of hearing aid use on them.

There has been a recent movement in exploring ways to promote the field of audiology to a traditionally under-represented population of students. The course will explore the specific actions that are being taken as well as the reasons why we collectively will be better professionals because of it.

This presentation uses the Integrated Behavioral Model used in public health interventions to identify the barriers preventing the implementation of a cognitive decline screening program in an audiology practice. This course will discuss the barriers involved with implementing a screening program and provide concrete guidance on practical steps an audiologist can take to begin a screening program in their practice.

In this podcast, Andre Marcoux, PhD, of WS Audiology Canada discusses the role self-stigma plays in low hearing aid uptake rates as well as how Signia’s product line including Active Pro and Styletto AX contribute to greater hearing aid acceptance rates.
Dr. Marcoux cites this recent study during the podcast: Signia Active: The Beginning of An Era of Hearing Without Stigma, Canadian Audiologist. 9(1), 2022. He also discusses research indicating 21% of resistant and hesitant hearing aid candidates accept hearing aids when the Active Pro and Styletto form factors are provided as options to these reluctant patients.

This course focuses on how language barriers impact access and quality of healthcare. It reviews the difficulties non-English speaking patients encounter when navigating the healthcare system and how that may impact the quality of services they receive. It also provides an overview of current trends in the use of professional interpreters, common errors interpreters make (professionals and ad-hocs), as well as parts of the message that generally do not get interpreted. Last it highlights the benefits of language concordance between the healthcare provider and the patient and lists some recommendations for clinicians working non-English speaking patients with special focus on the Spanish speaking population.

Changes in brain function as it relates to hearing aid use goes by many names. Acclimatization, adaptation, adjustment, and more recently, brain plasticity have all been used to describe the effects of amplification on the auditory system. Here to describe the effects of neuro-plasticity stemming from both hearing loss and hearing aid use are Dr. Limor Lavie and Dr. Karen Banai from the University of Haifa in Israel.

This interview with Dr. Rachael Piper will review her capstone study that examines self-perceived difficulties, willingness to pay, willingness to stay and speech intelligibility data as a function of hearing loss in older adults. Advantages and limitations of hearing aid technology and how to squeeze the most benefit from hearing aids in noise will be part of the conversation.
