This Grand Rounds session focuses on adult cases that incorporate a broad range of considerations in medical aspects of audiology and areas of health literacy and the interactions between hearing loss and speech impairment.

Artificial Intelligence is emerging from every corner, from ChatGPT to the healthcare sector. AI-driven hearing aid technology can enhance speech, reduce noise, employ beamforming strategies, and even track health metrics. The course defines Artificial Intelligence, reviews AI’s role in healthcare including hearing aids, and covers Phonak’s application of AI throughout the past two decades.

28.8 million adults with hearing loss could benefit from hearing aids, but only 30% use them! Buying hearing aids is a logical decision; just have the data and facts on your side. Wear a white coat for authority, make your factual case confidently to demonstrate your expertise, and the patient will naturally arrive at your recommendation. Right? Not really.
Neurological research shows that decision-making is mostly an emotion-driven activity. Overlooking this scientific fact can lead your patients to see you as an adversary to protect themselves against, instead of an ally. By being able to better understand and connect with your patients and address their resistance emotionally and empathetically, more of your patients will feel comfortable moving forward with hearing aids, and you will feel more confident during a hearing aid consultation appointment.

This course explores the impact of Symphonia, a software designed to create immersive soundscapes, on hearing aid users. The study includes a survey of 28 patients, highlighting the software's effectiveness in enhancing patient satisfaction, involvement, and understanding of real-world sounds.

During this course, we will illustrate how Oticon technologies are developed to provide those with hearing impairment a personalized means to meet their listening needs in any situation they may encounter.

Cultural literacy is an important component of patient-centered care, but how this is addressed by audiologists and their respective workplaces remains largely varied. This session provides an overview of audiologists’ perspectives on cultural literacy and the degree to which audiologists are prepared and confident in delivering culturally sensitive care necessary for patient-centered care.

As hearing aid wearers engage with technology more than they have in decades past, hearing care providers (HCPs) must remain at the forefront of the field, providing wearers with solutions that will enhance their listening experience, both within the hearing aid – and beyond. This course will explore the ecosystem of Widex solutions designed to empower wearers to live confidently with their devices and hear their best in every situation.

The course begins with a summary of the limitations of pure tone hearing screening followed by a review of the rationale for objective hearing screening of younger school age and preschool children. Most of the course is devoted to a description of critical steps in the development and implementation of an evidence-based efficient and effective hearing screening program for children of all ages.
